The cloth masks many are sporting these days offer some protection against COVID-19. However, they typically provide much less than the professional N95 masks used by healthcare workers. That may soon change. Recently, students from BYU’s College of Engineering teamed up with Nanos Foundation to develop a nanofiber membrane that can be sandwiched between the cloth pieces in a homemade mask, increasing efficacy up to 99%.

Two teams of BYU Civil Engineering students won first place in competitions at this year’s Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Mountain District Conference. Students competed in two competitions: the Traffic Bowl and the Kell Competition. Students Camille Lunt, Logan Bennett and Bruce Wang placed first in the Traffic Bowl. BYU Chemical Engineering awarded national nuclear energy research scholarships

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced that BYU would be among the 32 colleges and universities receiving funding from the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP). BYU is nationally recognized for nuclear energy research, so this isn't the first award students and faculty have received in the field of study. Earlier this year, a team of BYU Chemical Engineering professors received another $800k grant to continue research in clean energy with molten salt reactors.
