BYU supermileage vehicle places first in international competition

Have you ever used a flight simulator? BYU alum Jessica Collyer tests and improves them every day for her job at Hill Air Force Base as a software test engineer. It’s not always easy to figure out what you want to study in college. Kim Irwin came to BYU over 30 years ago thinking she wanted to be a home economics teacher. But, after working a summer job on a construction site, she realized her heart belonged to civil engineering. She is now a principal vice president of Bechtel National, serving as the project manager of a multi-billion-dollar project.

The BYU Compliant Mechanisms Research Lab enjoyed enormous success at this year’s Design Engineering Technical Conferences hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Major gaming festival showcases BYU student project
In January of this year, thousands of teens collaborated with the ghosts of Thomas Edison, Ada Lovelace, Steve Jobs and other renowned thinkers in order to defeat a mysterious villain known simply as “S.” This investigating took place within the confines of “The Tessera,” an alternate-reality game (ARG) designed by an interdisciplinary team of students from BYU and the University of Maryland. Thanks to funding provided by the National Science Foundation, these students created the educational game as a way to introduce teenagers to the world of computational thinking.
