Meet Ivy Stout

Ivy Stout has always had a fascination for engineering, watching electricians and plumbers at work in her home in Utah. Her fascination for how things were built and repaired led her to the Civil Engineering program. Ivy chose BYU because of the environment, saying, “You are surrounded by people who not only love learning but also love the gospel and serving others.”

She enjoys both the hands-on aspects and problem-solving involved and hopes to pursue a career as a project engineer. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree here at BYU to gain more experience and knowledge.

Ivy’s graduate studies focus on concrete. In the lab she works in, they are trying to develop a more sustainable concrete mix and develop better methods specifically for pavement. In addition to her studies, Ivy also works for Electrical Consultants, Inc. (ECI) in Woods Cross, Utah. She works as a design engineer and helps to design and build transmission lines.

One of her favorite experiences was her membership of a capstone team that she competed with in her junior year. Her team’s task was to create a concrete canoe to test against other civil engineering students’ canoes. Ivy has also served as a club officer in both the Society of Women Engineers and the Women in Civil Engineering; she has enjoyed supporting her peers and organizing fun events in these roles.

Outside of her studies, Ivy is an avid outdoors enthusiast, enjoying activities like hiking, skiing, and climbing. Ivy currently plays on the BYU women’s rugby team and loves it. Her favorite place on campus is Lavell Edwards Stadium, where she enjoys attending football games and taking a break from the engineering building. Her advice to fellow students?

“Reach out to your professors and TAs—they truly want to help you succeed. BYU has so many resources to help you do well in your studies, so take advantage of them!”

We are so thankful for Ivy’s thoughts and that she is a part of our student body.
