Meet Asher Smith
BYU was always in the cards for Asher with his father being a professor in the School of Music; he grew up in Provo and couldn’t imagine his college years anywhere else.
Going to BYU may have been a no-brainer, but Asher struggled to find a major that aligned with his career goals. He went through the schools of nursing, music, business, philosophy, and even contemplated dropping out. At the encouragement of his dad, Asher decided to stay one more semester…and that’s when he found Technology and Engineering Studies (TES)!
Asher said that TES was “perfect” for him. He loves having so many creative outlets to build and design whatever he wants. He feels that having TES as his major has kept him grounded in school which he never felt before switching majors. Although choosing a major was a long road, Asher now is at home with TES in the College of Engineering.
For other students experiencing the same thing, Asher advised, “If you don’t feel like you’re getting somewhere in a certain major, it’s okay. It might take seven.”
Asher loves to get involved in his major. He is the President of the TES Club; the club gets together every other week to listen to an industry professional and host fun events!
“We’re a family over there in TES. It feels like a club every day,” Asher said.
Asher enjoys finding and buying used goods on online marketplaces and rebuilding/fixing them for resale. Naturally, he loves the creative and hands-on component of Technology and Engineering Studies—there is always something to be working on. Asher’s end goal is to start his own business and already has several ideas! His interest in business was only fueled during his favorite class, Entrepreneurship 101.
If entrepreneurship doesn’t work out, Asher hopes to get his Ph.D. and become a professor. He said he would love to teach an engineering or business class. Asher explained that he has seen his dad’s ability to help others grow and develop, so he wants to be able to do the same thing for students in the future.
Some of Asher’s other interests include skiing, roller skating, skateboarding, golf, and fashion. Asher also loves music. His favorite place on campus is the music building because it feels so familiar to him. With his dad being a professor and two siblings studying music, he regularly finds himself in that building. Asher is also a member of BYU Vocal Point! He sings every single day and is extremely grateful for the guys in the group and the joy they bring into his life.
Asher’s last advice to his fellow engineering students, especially those just starting, is this: “Take it slow, you don’t have to figure it all out right now. Trust God and He will lead you; things will work out.”
We are so thankful for the advice Asher has shared and love having him as a member of our student body!
