McLain replaces outgoing Associate Dean Larry Howell
Dr. Tim McLain has been appointed to Associate Dean of the College of Engineering, effective July 15, 2019. Dr. McLain replaces Dr. Larry Howell, who was appointed as the new associate academic vice president for research and graduate studies on July 1.
Dr. McLain joined the BYU faculty in 1995. He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from BYU (’86 and '87) and earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (’95). Dr. McLain’s research has focused on guidance, dynamics, control, and autonomy of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). For the past seven years, he has been the director of the Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS), sponsored by the National Science Foundation. C-UAS involves five universities and over 30 industry partners and has supported the research of more than 150 students since its inception.
Of Dr. McLain, Dean Michael Jensen said, "Tim has an outstanding record as a faculty member and as an administrator, and he is well prepared for this role. I am excited to have him on our team.”
