Black Fingers of Death lurk in BYU undergraduate's science project
BYU student Heather Finch approached the lab with all the tools she needed to analyze the Black Fingers of Death. She slowly lifted the container’s lid and found, as expected, the fingers had choked all the life out of their host.
Don’t let the name fool you, Black Fingers of Death (BFOD) has nothing to do with ghouls, ghosts or zombies. The good news is that the cryptically named fungus is a threat to an invasive weed rather than humans.

R.E.P.S. wins 2011 Student Innovator of the Year
Hall, a civil engineering major, and Garvin won the first-place prize for using an inexpensive, versatile material to create customizable furniture. R.E.P.S., short for reinforced expanded polystyrene structure, is made of expanded polystyrene coated with a polyurethane/polyurea hardcoat. The two materials combine to make a very strong and flexible shell. Not only is the final product strong enough for furniture, but the hardcoat is flame, insect and termite retardant as well as having water resistant qualities. It is also light weight.
