James R. Maughan was born in Schenectady, NY and is a second-generation GE employee. He received a B.S. from Brigham Young University, and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University, all in Mechanical Engineering. In 1989, he joined GE Research in Schenectady, NY, to work in the areas of low emissions combustion research, aircraft engines, and gas appliances before transferring to GE Power in 1997 to lead the introduction of low emissions combustion systems into GE gas turbines. After further engineering leadership in Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine, and Energy Services, he had executive responsibility for GE’s global energy-related research, GE’s Controls and Power Electronics business, and the Product Service division of GE Wind Energy. He returned to GE Research in 2013 as Technical Director of Aerothermal and Mechanical technology across GE’s range of industrial businesses. He began his current role with GE Power in 2016 as the first employee of a new division for the design and manufacture of advanced turbine airfoil components.
