In the sesquicentennial year of your alma mater, we celebrate light. This email reviews some of the ways BYU Engineering has been able to be a part of that celebration:
- Seven highlighted projects that BYU Engineering has participated in to send "beacons of light" throughout the world
- A spotlight on BYU Engineering alumni, including an honored alumnus, Gary Brown, and retired electrical engineer, Vance Campbell, who read a letter he wrote for the 50-year-old time capsule
- A summary of our college's contributions for Giving Cougsday
- Other student and faculty accomplishments
Thank you for being a part of our college's light spread across the globe.

BYU 150: BEACONS OF LIGHT
|
|
|
Over 100 BYU departments and colleges have shared a few projects that demonstrate how they have fulfilled BYU's motto: "Enter to learn; go forth to serve."
Below is one of the seven "beacons of light" that BYU Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering is highlighting: the world's smallest 3D printing capabilities, put into practice with miniature temples.

Beacon of Light: Tiny Temples

Among timeless BYU traditions, musical spectaculars, a BYU win at the rivalry game and more, BYU Engineering alumni made their appearances throughout homecoming week.

For our first college lecture of the year, our college recognized Gary Brown as our Honored Alum of BYU Engineering, one of many that were recognized by BYU colleges. He spoke to students about being bold and trying things in their careers that might seem impossible. Brown is a retired CPU engineer, working with Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and NVIDIA throughout his career. Stay tuned to our YouTube channel to watch his full lecture, as well as a spotlight video.

A few times throughout each semester, we have the privilege to feature fantastic alumni like Vance and Gary. Enjoy past and future alumni spotlights in our video series, as well as other interesting content on our YouTube channel about the people that make our college great.

On October 21-22, the BYU community—faculty and staff, students, family, friends, and alumni alike—supported BYU and its students by donating funds on Giving Cougsday.
The BYU College of Engineering had the most donors out of all the colleges, raising $105,630 from 698 donors. Thank you! We are incredibly grateful for our amazing alumni and all you do to give back to our college.
Additionally, thanks to a generous $30,000 donation from one of our anonymous alumni, the three engineering departments with the top alumni participation in Giving Cougsday earned additional cash prizes for further student aid!

Here are the results of the department race:
- 1st place: Manufacturing Engineering, winning $15,000
- 2nd place: Chemical & Biological Engineering, winning $10,000
- 3rd place: Civil & Construction Engineering, winning $5,000

NASA and the U.S Air Force sealed their alliance by deploying the first-ever origami solar panel, designed by the BYU Compliant Mechanisms team. The research team collaborated with a variety of academics, even from other universities, to create its small design, automatic deployment, and long-term stability.

Kelvin Wang, a BYU engineering undergrad, discovered a new family of origami patterns that could benefit a variety of fields, from space systems to medical devices. The New York Times and BYU University Communications captured how he did it.
